Kochi: Voting for Kerala's 140 Legislative Assembly seats will take place on Thursday in a single phase. A total of 2.71 crore voters are set to exercise their franchise here. There are 883 candidates in the electoral fray in Kerala. The contest in the state is primarily between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), while the BJP-led NDA is also striving to strengthen its presence.

What is the situation in Kerala?

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the LDF is attempting to return to power for a third consecutive term. It is making its 10-year track record—which includes infrastructure development, welfare schemes, and crisis management—a key electoral issue. However, the LDF is facing the challenge of anti-incumbency sentiment as well as setbacks encountered in recent elections. Meanwhile, the UDF is hoping to return to power by highlighting issues such as public discontent against the government and allegations of corruption.

The UDF has also leveled allegations against the Left Front, accusing it of collusion with the BJP and maintaining ties with organizations such as the SDPI. On the other hand, the BJP is aiming to improve upon its performance in previous elections in the state and is positioning itself as a viable alternative to both the LDF and the UDF.
